Used J Needham was the maker of the first shotgun with ejectors; a self cocking ejector gun in 1874.
He was the original British patenter of needle guns in 1852 and this guns of this design were made by both Needham and John Rigby.
The picture of John Rigby’s needle gun appears on page 24 and 25 of “The Shotgun History and Development” Jeffrey Boothroyd, 1993.
Needham also patented a number of sliding barrel designs in 1862, although Boothroyd states he has not seen one which was put into production.
The picture of the Needham ejector gun appears on page 30 of Boothroyd’s “Shotguns and Gunsmiths, The Vintage Years” 1993.
This ejector design was modified by W W Greener in 1881, but most guns now use the Deeley or Southgate design which are housed within the fore end rather than the action like the Needham or Dickson systems.
A lovely picture of a Needham hammer gun appears on page 66 of the book “Sidelocks & Boxlocks, The Classic British Shotguns” by Boothroyd 1991.
