The Martini Endfield mark 1 is effectively a Martini Henry mark 3 rebarreled to 303 and with a new extractor installed whilst the Martini Enfield mark 2 rifles are generally of new manufacture though there are examples of converted mark 2 rifles. From 1889 Martini Henry conversions used Metford rifle barrels and were known as Martini Metford rifles which were more than suitable for the first 303 cartridges which used black powder as the pallet. But they wore out very quickly when fired with cordite cartridges introduced in 1985 and so in 1895 the Enfield rifled barrel was introduced which was much more satisfactory and suitable for use with modern smokeless ammunition. Martini rifles in both calibers were used from 1878 to 1902 which is quite a time span .The example shown here which was manufactured by LSA Co (London Small Arms Co) in 1886 and was inverted to 303 by HRB Co (Henry Rifle Barrel Co) in 1897. This rifle was a rebarreled carbon that has had the woodwork cut down but the front cap has been used as the new forend end. The rifle is still fitted with its sliding ramp rear and fixed post front . The exterior shows all the signs of a gun its age. The barrel, although retaining most of its blue, has pits and some rust. The receiver has a light coating of rust and some of the original finish is still visible. The woodwork is in reasonable condition but has been modified by thinning and reshaping. The factory metal butt plate still remains. These guns are a little unusual to find today and we haven’t seen many of them over the last few years. So as far as we’re concerned here they’re on the hard to find list, so if you’ve got one and you want to sell it ,or trade it, please don’t hesitate in contacting us.
