In 1944 the British General Staff issued a specification for a new sub machine gun. It stated that the weapon should weigh no more than 6lbs (2.7kg); should fire 9x19mm parabellum ammunition; have a rate of fire no more than 500 rounds per minute; and should be sufficiently accurate to allow 5 single shots to be fired into a one foot square target at 100 yards. The British Army adopted it. It started to replace the Sten in 1953.
The Stirling sub machine gun pictured here is complete, but does show some signs of wear and tear. It appears to have been an issue weapon, having the typical chips etc in the coating which covers the gun. These are a little bit unusual. There doesn’t seem to be heaps and heaps of them around, so if you’re looking for one, ours would be well worth having a look at.
